This year’s Manchester Branch hike will be on Saturday 6 July, to Ashurst’s Beacon, near Appley Bridge, in the hills to the west of Wigan. The route is about six miles and includes some steady but gentle climbing, with excellent views from the Beacon at the top. We’ll then descend to the valley and walk along the Leeds–Liverpool canal back to Appley Bridge.
Meet at 12.15 at Appley Bridge station; this means catching the 11.26 from Manchester Victoria. From Bolton, take the 11.36 and change at Hindley. Best to check the train times nearer the date. Wear robust shoes; bring a waterproof top; bring a flask of water or coffee and a packed lunch.
