News from Kent and Sussex Branch:

The SPGB today became the first party to have a candidate nomination accepted in the Shepway District for the Kent County Council election on 4th May.   Both divisions of Folkestone town, with a combined electorate of just over 26,000 on newly re-drawn boundaries, are being contested with Max Hess and Andy Thomas being the candidates.

We are also standing for East Sussex County Council, in the Lewes electoral division which is close to Brighton and has almost 9,000 voters, where Howard Pilott will be the candidate.

Both areas were contested by the Party in the 2014 European Parliament elections, and Folkestone was also contested in the 2015 general election, when a candidate was also stood in the District council election.

West London branch, in conjunction with comrades living there and elsewhere in Surrey, is standing a candidate in Guildford in the county council elections in Surrey where in the 1980s there was a very active Party branch. Although Surrey was part of the South East Region for the 2014 Euroelections, it was the only country where we didn't arrange for Royal Mail to distribute our election manifesto, which is one reason why we will be using the wording of that manifesto. But we'll have to distribute it iurselves since there is no free postal distribution in local elections. The nomination papers for our candidate in Guildford West were handed in and accepted today.More details here:http://spgb.blogspot.co.uk/2017/03/election-time-again.html

We now know who are opponents are in Guildford West:Chandler (Tory), Dokimakis (Lab), Purvis (Green), White (LibDem) and Morris (Peace Party).White is the outgoing councillor. There is no UKIP candidate (no point anyway, now they've won the referendum). The Peace Party is a christian-inspired pacificist party, based in Guildford, which regularly contests elections there, including the last General Election. They are on the ballot paper as "The Peace Party – Non-Violence, Justice, Environment".In the rest of Surrey, there is one other candidate using the word "socialist" on the ballot paper: TUSC in Staines.

Good leaflet – snappy short with just enough information to make one want to read more.  I would be interested to know what sort of response this leaflet elicits  And if you come across anyone who might remember Guildford Branch back in the 1980s….

Letter published in today's Weekly Worker:

    Quote:
BrandingAs the Socialist Party candidate in Guildford West in this May’s Surrey county council elections, I note that Paul Demarty is urging workers there to vote for the Labour candidate and his pathetic slogan of “Say no to 4.99% council tax increases” (‘The Socialist Party’s decision to stand candidates in May is delusional’, April 6).The Militant Tendency, (standing as Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition), has a candidate in Staines for these elections, but he is standing on the ‘transitional demand’ of capitalism in a slump without austerity, whereas we are standing on the socialist ‘maximum programme’ of the common ownership and democratic control of the means of wealth production, with production solely for use and distribution according to needs. The Socialist Party is also standing candidates in Kent and in East Sussex.Adam BuickSocialist Party of Great Britain

NEWS RELEASETo: The News Desk, Kent on Sunday (Shepway Edition)

    Quote:
Socialists say ‘big change’ is needed to solve care crisisIn its manifesto for the Kent County Council election on 4th May, The Socialist Party of Great Britain claims that solving the crisis in health and social care will require far bigger change than the other parties are suggesting."Ever since the NHS was founded, both Labour and Tory governments have been forced from time to time to cut spending on health to improve their finances. However well-meaning they may be, none of their policies can change this”, the Party claims. The Socialist Party, which campaigns for the shared and democratic ownership of the earth’s resources, with all goods and services produced for use rather than for profit, is standing two candidates in Folkestone.Max Hess, candidate for Folkestone East, said “The current crisis in the health care market is a pressing example of why change is necessary. Why are there longer waiting times for medical treatment, increasing delays in ambulances and warnings of a collapse in social care?”“The problem is today’s outdated system where finance determines what can, and cannot happen. Funding has been cut while the number of people over the age of 85 rose by a third. Now Kent faces even more cuts in health and social care of up to £486 million,” he added.“Capitalism and its monetary calculations have created an artificial shortage of services to treat and care for patients. We suggest a better way,” said Andy Thomas, candidate for Folkestone West. “At a time when we can easily feed, house and care for every human on the planet, it no longer makes sense to use money to ration access to everything we need. When the majority of people agree, we can peacefully change that. We are asking for change to start in Folkestone on May 4th.”Robert CoxElection AgentThe Socialist Party Of Great Britain
