Statement from V Maratty re EC Motion 9 2016 May EC

The videos were produced openly and with full consultation with as many members as possible on the SPGB Forum and Facebook.  All members that commented made positive comments and recommendations and at no point did I feel I was being underhanded.

I stated clearly that I was seeking membership approval via the EC when the video was almost complete, which is why it was in front of the May EC.

At that time I was social media officer for NERB with a mandate to produce Videos for consideration. I had also been nominated onto the AV committee.

All through the process copyright issues were considered

I cannot think of a more democratic way of producing a video.

I regret that the EC has taken this attitude to my genuine intentions.

To accommodate the EC regarding AV committee appointments, I suggested that I don’t need to be on a committee to make videos. Perhaps the EC has misunderstood and took the statement as an act of defiance. That was not my intention.

I have the motivation, knowledge and equipment to produce video free of charge, without payment. I hope the EC and membership reconsiders rejecting my offer.

Dear Vin, The EC, at its meeting of 7th May, considered your branch's resolution, dated 29th February, alleging interference by the Internet Committee in your branch's online meetings without permission of the Chair (deferred from March EC Item 6 (c)(i)). Branch Resolution: "in line with Rule 5. "Members have the right to attend at meetings of Branches other than their own, and speak with the permission of the Branch" can the EC remind all members that as NERB branch meetings, held on the forum, follow the same format as any other Branch meeting, any visitors to the site during a branch meeting (including Moderators and members of the IC) should ask permission of the branch to speak, and that permission to speak will only be given if a majority of the members of the branch attending agree to allow the non branch member to speak. In view of this can the EC be asked to inform the Internet Committee that the section of the forum 'Regional Branches, North East' is for the business of the branch." CARRIED 7-0-1.  The discussion of the EC concluded that the Internet Committee contribution had been made on another thread of the Forum.  The EC resolved that after due consideration the EC rejects the idea that the postby the Internet committee was an interruption of the NERB meeting and resolves that it does not need to take any further action on this matter. YFS, Oliver BondActing General Secretary

In hindsight this was a flawed resolution by the NERB.

As far as I can tell, no non NERB member, until quite recently, has posted at a branch meeting without permission of the branch.

Other non NERB forum members have posted on other parts of the NERB site, to ask questions and engage in non meeting discussion with branch members. As Linda (a non NERB member) is doing so now.

I would agree with that but then its a learning curve. Online meetings are a new thing. We shouldn't discourage non members from contributing

As for myself I am merely passing info on from the acting secretary as a secretary has yet to come forward and be appointed

I've always thought the NERB online meetings would be an interesting and potentialy beneficial experiment. There's been plenty to learn from.

Thanks for passing the info on Linda. Tim is now NERB acting secretary as of 18th this month.

If Tim has been appointed someone will need to inform, Tim, Vin, Gen Sec and Central Organiser as they are not aware of this or any decision made on 18th and correspondence is still being sent to Vin

But it is good news

Dear Comrades,

The EC, at its meeting of 7th May, considered a report by the Central Organiser (27th April) which raised the principle of a member being unable to participate in on-line branch meetings on the Party's website forum as an unintended consequence of being suspended from engaging  in discussions in other parts of the forum.

Cde Darren Poynton of the Internet Committee provided the following report (27th April) in response to this problem -

" The problem is intended to be fixed with the implementation of the new version of the website. Which should hopefully be completed in about 3 to 4 months. This will enable different posting permissions to be set to different sections of the web forum. So a ban on one part of the Forum need not effect a ban on other parts. There seems little point duplicating this work on the existing site as it will be superseded by the new one.

That said, the website forum is not the only place that branches can meet online. The Internet Committee can provide help with accessing alternative venues."

Cde Mark Lansbury of the Internet Committee suggested one site which provided free forums-

http://www.bravenet.com/

The EC recommends that branches contact the Internet Committee for support and advice onproblems they experience in conducting meetings on-line.

YFS,

Oliver Bond

Acting General Secretary
