    PHEWWW…when i saw the topic headline, i thought it meant our Robbo…90 yrs of age …a good innings…

    Yes, he was a lifelong Russia-lover. The obituary in today's Times says that

    In 1985 he was expelled from the [Communist] party for "conduct deeply detrimental to the party".

    It doesn't say what it was, but at that point the "Eurocommunists" would have been in charge of the CP, wouldn't they?
