Hi,
As a new member of the forum, I wanted to introduce myself.
My name is Neil, I’m 35 and I live and work around Canterbury. I’ve lived here 10 years and am originally from South Africa (I hold dual citizenship). In my day job, I am a Project Manager in software and technology development for a global telecommunications company. In my spare time, I enjoy running and have recently completed a Foundation Degree in Sports Science. I have applied and am hoping to become a member of the SPGB.
I’ve always appreciated Socialism in a John Lennon's Imagine kind of way and during my Sports Science studies covered a module in the Sociology of Sport. Maybe it was just how I read it, but the course seemed particularly focused on the how sport benefits under Socialism. I think this was the start of what has become a pervasive theme in my thinking. In a nutshell, I have been aware of the rampant horrors of capitalism and motivated to commit my own efforts to fight against it, yet am frustrated as I feel my efforts are insignificant.
I believe that technology can play an important role in the future of the human race and it could really solve the problems of the world, for everyone. Yet, like everything under capitalism, we limit our technological advancement through our greed; always fighting against each other, rather than working forwards together. But technology should be used in the fight against capitalism. With the correct design and implementation, technology could:

be disruptive to the capitalist process

reach and connect a large number of people
-
do good
-
change peoples way of thinking
I have ideas, which I’m always happy to offer for discussion, but I don’t consider myself an ideas man (haven’t had any REALLY good ones yet). But I am a good Project Manager, if I understand the direction to head in, I will do everything that I can to see that goal reached with steady and relentless forward progress. I know that I have a lot to offer and I am at the point where I want to find like-minded folks with similar passions and energy.
Hello Neil, and welcome to the forum and, very likely, the party. I'm a member of Kent & Sussex branch and understand you met some of my fellow-comrades at the street stall in Canterbury last Saturday. Looking forward to meeting you and hearing your ideas.Dave

Thank you.Dave, I did manage to speak with Rob and Mandy at the stall and am keen to meet up more.Robin, you really tested my Afrikaans there, but I managed without Google Translate! But I'll stick to English if you don't mind; I can't say 'ek kan die taal praat' any longer, I'm afraid to say. I was born in Vereeniging but moved to Germiston to start school and lived around that area for nearly 20 years. Small world… Where are you based now?

Small world… Where are you based now?Hi Neil, Im based in Southern Spain now – in the Alpujarras, south of Granada. Actually, some of the landscape around here reminds me of South Africa. Very rugged. You almost expect a troop of baboons to come over the top of the cliffs sometimes and maybe the odd leopard. Gawd, I remember Vereeniging and of course Germiston where I was born. We lived in Klippoortjie in Germiston not far from the lake and I recall there was a series of gruseome murders that took place around the lake back then – a serial killer or something. I guess you probably went to Germiston High, eh? Anyway have fun on the forum. Its good to have new faces and yes, as you say, what a small world it is! Cheers
