    Something to think about

The Legacy of the Anti-Psychiatry Movement

I think we have come a long way from the "chemical-cosh" but care in the community has failed and psychiatric units were closed for cost-cutting reasons and the budgets didn't materialise for community care.

As was the training giving to psychiatric nurses when Blair created a fast-tracked training-on-the-job for a new "community psychiatric nurse" qualification after some highly publicised incidents from unsupervised patients

But i recall a former member who was a experienced psychiatric nurse explaining to me a very long time ago during this period of RD Laing etc, that he hoped that schizophrenia had an organic cause and not so much a social one for he thought it much more likely that once it was known what caused it, a medication could be designed to treat it.

If on the other hand, it was a far more social cause of the illness, then changing the nature of society was going to be a very more difficult task.

That movement has been used as an excuse to close all the Psychiatrist Hospital and Mental treatment centre by the states to save the surplus value to the ruling elite, they are part of the dismantling of the health service system. There are many human beings with mentals problem walking in the streets without any medical supervisions and without any medications, The cost of Psychiatric service is not for poor peoples, many doctors study Medicine in order to accumulate money, but Medicine is a profession to serve our society. There is a good book which covers all those problems written by a Psychitriasts known as Zaglul, he treated his patients as human beings."My 500 crazy patients" ( or 501 because he included himself, and every reader is an additional person with mentals problems ) He discovered that most of his patients did not have a mental problem only, they also had sociological problems. It is textbook used at different schools of medicinehttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt7552938/https://www.amazon.com/Mis-locos-Spanish-Antonio-Zaglul/dp/1545037752

You make a good point…My friend psychiatric nurse also pointed out to me that, the US, The USSR and the UK each had a different definition of what schizophrenia actually was, and the reason was pretty much political ones. It would be as if three countries defined measles as different causes and different symptoms with different treatments. We do have now what it described as the medicalization of social problems with umpteen new disorders being identified.
