There is a public lecture on at the Lit and Phil in Newcastle on Tues 5th June title Why Marx Matters,

it's being presented by Professor Gregory Claeys as part of an ongoing series of lectures about philosophy sponsered by a local publisher who sepecialises in Philosophy.

I thinik it was Claeys who wrote a recent (not very good) article in BBC History Magazine about Marx.

He also had a book on utopianism reviewed in the Standard.and has just released a book called Marx and Marxism (Haven't had a chance to read it)

It's £4 to get in, here is a link

I'm going if anyone else is about and is keen, get in touch.

This review from an  Amazon buyer indicates that the professor has probably been relying on secondary sources. He has not read Marx and if he has he has not understood what he was reading.  If you know nothing about Marx then this book will give you some idea of the enormous scope of his work. Unfortunately it will also send you off in a number of unhelpful directions. For example Gregory Claeys thinks that Marx's theory of surplus value was not original because early socialist had theories of "unequal exchange". He does not understand that the point of the theory is to show how profit arises from equal exchange. The book is full of such confusions.
